Food & Wine's Mad Genius, Justin Chapple, shares his hack for the perfect summery treat: sangria watermelon popsicles! They are like a cocktail on a stick.
I've got three words for you. Watermelon, sangria. popsicles. [MUSIC] Traditionally when you make sangria, you infuse a combination of wine and brandy with fresh fruit. But thanks to my friend, Chef Jamie Bissonnette, I am turning the tables, and I'm gonna infuse Some fresh fruit with wine. I have here just a small watermelon wedge. I've already peeled it, and I'm just gonna cut this into thick slabs. I'd say about an inch to an inch and a quarter thick. Transfer them to a large baking dish. Here comes the boozy part, the better part. I have here my Sangria vase. which is a combination of red wine and some brandy. You can use white wine, if you'd like. It's totally up to you. And you're just gonna go ahead and pour it over the watermelon. You only need the sangria base to come up about half way. As these marinate, you'll go ahead and just flip them halfway through. So, I'm gonna go ahead and pop these in the refrigerator. All right, I've let my water marinate in the refrigerator for about an hour. Got them good and boozy. And because I'm making popsicle's, I'm gonna go ahead and use these classic popsicle sticks. And stick it right into the bottom of the watermelon wedge, just like that. And I'm gonna go ahead and transfer it to a parchment paper lined baking sheet, just to prevent sticking. Make sure to save The extra Sangria for sipping. You're gonna pop these in the freezer for a few hours just until they're nice and firm. These are nicely frozen, gotta say they are the perfect summery treat. They are a cocktail on a stick. We're gonna have ourselves an icy treat!
