Behind the swinging doors to the kitchen of any restaurant in New York City there exists a secret world, a hidden ecosystem of chefs, servers, bussers, and bartenders falling in and out of love as they bring out filets and vintage Syrah to their discerning patrons.

Sweetbitter, based on the 2016 novel by Stephanie Danler, follows Tess, a naïve 22-year-old backwaitress at an eminent New York City restaurant who begins her education in food and wine and relationships with the help of her coworkers.

Danler, who had also worked as a waitress, famously sold the novel after meeting publisher Peter Gethers at the restaurant where she was working. The author serves as creator, executive producer, and a writer on the show.

Starring Ella Purnell (Never Let Me Go, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) as Tess, the cast also features Tom Sturridge and Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex) as the bartender and older waitress with whom she falls into a chaotic love-triangle.

Sweetbitter premieres on STARZ on Sunday, May 6.
