Fans are sticking to the Rick and Morty season premiere like dipping sauce on chicken nuggets.
Adult Swim’s surprise debut of the unannounced first episode of the animated comedy’s third season sent followers into a frenzy Saturday night, additionally inspiring a collective internet craving for a long-gone McDonald’s food item previously inspired by the 1998 animated family film Mulan.
Audiences hungered for the discontinued product — enough so that an online petition to bring back the condiment has garnered roughly 6,400 signatures thus far — after one of the show’s characters cited it as one of his inspirations. Across Saturday’s airing, characters from the Rick and Morty universe also appeared in a series of ads for real-life businesses, including Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s.
McDonald’s has yet to address the Rick and Morty craze on social media, but there’s still hope the fast food chain could resurrect its Szechuan sauce in the near future, as Disney is currently working on a live-action adaptation of the animated classic that first inspired the product.
