These new details are out of this world.
Just in time for Christmas, creatives at Walt Disney Imagineering have given Star Wars fans the greatest holiday gift of all: a new sneak peek into the immersive themed land coming to Disney World and Disneyland in 2019.
Disney released new images and details related to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at a fan event at Hollywood Studios on Dec. 16. Disney creative executive Scott Trowbridge, Imagineers Robin Reardon and Chris Beatty, and Lucasfilm designer Doug Chiang participated in an exclusive panel at the park, with Trowbridge sharing details of the event on the Disney Parks Blog.
“We talked a lot about authenticity – how we are building a real place in the ‘Star Wars’ universe and how we are working hard to get the details right,” he writes on the blog.
He cites the park’s Millennium Falcon ride as an example, writing, “We’ve all seen her on screen, but until you climb through that hatch, walk through her hallways, sit inside the cockpit, power her up and actually FLY her yourself, it’s not quite the same.”
The ride promises to allow guests to do just that, putting them inside the action and letting them pilot the ship. In addition to the falcon, the 14-acre park’s other attraction will place guests in a battle between the First Order and the Resistance — surely fulfilling a dream for Star Wars fans everywhere.
Another image shared during the panel shows lifesize X Wing Starfighter replicas, which will be another feature of the Disney Star Wars universe.
Inspired by travel and distant lands, the panel also discussed the interactive, detailed world they’re working to create on the remote outpost of Batuu. Imagineer Chris Beatty described his research into the markets of Istanbul and Marrakech, and how these destinations helped to inspire the markets and shops guests will be able to visit at Galaxy’s Edge.
“They were a great source of inspiration for the marketplace in our village where we can explore a rich collection of shops and merchant stalls,” Trowbridge writes.
He even describes a creature like a Toydarian, which viewers saw back in "The Phantom Menace," as a merchant who would sell unique, hand-crafted toys out of one of the market’s stalls, offering souvenirs unlike anything else you could get in a Disney Park.
Although the parks won’t be ready for their public debut for over a year, these tidbits of information are sure to keep Star Wars fans going, awaiting the day they can finally immerse themselves in a galactic universe.
