Brand New Series 'Top Chef Amateurs' Is Coming to Bravo Next Year
Even if you're not a professional chef, you've still probably tuned into Top Chef and wondered what it would be like to whip up a dish in the Top Chef Kitchen. Well, your chance may finally be here: Bravo has officially announced that Top Chef Amateurs, a new home cook version of the long-running Top Chef series, will debut on a still-to-be-determined date in 2021 with the network billing the show as giving “talented home cooks the opportunity of a lifetime to test their skills in the illustrious Top Chef kitchen.”—which does sound pretty awesome.
The program will be hosted by perennial Top Chef judge Gail Simmons, who fans may recall previously showed off her hosting chops in another spinoff, Top Chef: Just Desserts. As for the format, the show will pit two competitors against each other in every episode, and “each amateur chef will compete in some of the most iconic challenges from the Top Chef archives,” the network announcement explains. Amateurs also promises appearances from "Top Chef finalists, frontrunners and fan favorites Eric Adjepong, Richard Blais, Jennifer Carroll, Shirley Chung, Stephanie Cmar, Tiffany Derry, Joe Flamm, Gregory Gourdet, Melissa King, Kwame Onwuachi, Dale Talde, and Isaac Toups." So, yeah, the series will also feature plenty of pros, too.
Meanwhile, the trusted Hollywood trade publication Variety reports that production is set to begin later this month in Portland, Oregon. Top Chef (non-amateur) is currently shooting its 18th season—also scheduled to air next year—in the city, and Top Chef Amateurs will commence with a similar production bubble.
And finally, though the show won’t arrive for months, Bravo is already looking to get fans involved on Twitter. From now until Friday, the network is asking people to tweet @BravoTopChef to decide which of two classic challenges will appear on Amateurs: the Seven Deadly Sins Challenge (#TopChefSeven) or the Aphrodisiac Challenge (#TopChefAphrodisiac). It may not be the most important vote going on right now, but hey, you might as well have your voice heard.
