News Taco Bell Is Giving the Mexican Pizza Its Own Musical Featuring Doja Cat and Dolly Parton Yes, the musical is real. Yes, it's premiering exclusively on TikTok. Yes, it has the talent to be (potentially) really good. Food & Wine's Editorial Guidelines Published on May 9, 2022 Share Tweet Pin Email Items are permanently pulled off fast food menus all the time with little fanfare. It's been over 20 years and I still have no clue what happened to the Arch Deluxe. But when Taco Bell decided to discontinue its Mexican Pizza, the decision either unleashed an unforeseen groundswell of organic support or was one of the savviest marketing moves in recent memory, because now all the fervor surrounding it has even gone on to inspire a musical with help from two Grammy award-winning songwriters and featuring iconic performers from two generations. Today, Taco Bell announced Mexican Pizza: The Musical. Premiering exclusively on TikTok on May 26 at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT, the production features two stars who have already been associated with the Mexican Pizza's return — Doja Cat and Dolly Parton — and has music from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear who, earlier this year, won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical. Fitting the viral theme, TikTok star Victor Kunda, who helped bring the idea of a Mexican Pizza musical to life in one of his videos, also appears. And veteran TV writer and comedian Hannah Friedman (Obi-Wan Kenobi; Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp) penned the script. Courtesy of Taco Bell As for what to expect, Taco Bell says the project is "a satirical musical about the 'harrowing' story of those who fought to bring back the Mexican Pizza," that "will feature original music to spotlight the brand's biggest fans." And if Dolly Parton's Instagram is to be trusted, the front of the script states "Based on the true story of the Internet losing its mind." For those in need of a history lesson, Taco Bell announced plans to pull the Mexican Pizza from menus in 2020. Within a month, a Change.org petition advocating for its return had racked up over 100,000 signatures. Last year, Doja Cat chimed in on Twitter that she would do everything she could to help get the Mexican Pizza back, and rumors began to swirl that it would indeed return. Earlier this year, Dolly Parton admitted her appreciation of the Mexican Pizza in an interview. And not long after, Doja Cat began dropping serious hints that a return was imminent. Finally, in April, Taco Bell officially announced the comeback date. Meanwhile, if you're like, "I hate drama, have no idea what TikTok is, and have even less interest in musical theater, but I do want to eat a Mexican Pizza," well, here is the info you've been looking for: The Mexican Pizza returns to Taco Bell menus nationwide on May 19.
