A California Bakery Makes ‘Harry Potter,’ Winter Olympics, and ‘Stranger Things' Macarons
Irvine’s Honey & Butter offers a rotating menu of sweet tributes to pop culture icons.
California’s Honey & Butter is making incredible and edible tributes to your favorite pop culture characters. The popular Irvine-based spot is known for its menu of sweet and colorful macarons. Everything from the almond flour shells and the buttercream filling is made from scratch daily, with each of the cookies piped by hand. The kitchen, which is so popular it heavily advertises the times its macarons go on sale each day, offers a regular menu of flavors like Oreo, Fruity Pebbles, Matcha, Sea Salted Caramel, and Churro that you can buy in store or pre-order. There is also a rotating menu of specialty flavors.
But it’s Honey & Butters’ Creature Macarons, or “creature cookies,” that have really put them on the map. Starting at noon, people clamor to get orders in through the kitchen’s first-come, first served rule, eager to take home their own delectable (and adorable) pop culturally-inspired sugary sandwiches.
These macarons are so sought after the company was even asked to craft special Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and Regular Show macarons exclusively for Cartoon Network. Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Hey Arnold!, Overwatch, It, and Dr. Suess are among the many other properties that have inspired the incredibly detailed, limited-run macarons. Most recently that’s included a Bob’s Burgers Valentine’s set, and the soon-to-be-released Winter Olympics inspired Yuri!!! on Ice cookies.
“Our creatures are meticulously decorated by hand,” the bakery states on its website. “We love the human element of making them.”
The fact that each cookie has a personal touch can make indulging in them extra meaningful, but remember that also leads to limited quantities. So if you want to get yours, you’ll need to arrive on advertised dates at either their Irvine (633 Spectrum Center Dr, Irvine, CA) location or Costa Mesa (2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, CA). And if you can’t bring yourself to eat these culinary works of art right after you buy them, you can keep yours past Honey & Butter’s recommend eat-within-three-days date by freezing them in an airtight bag. This will give you a few more months to enjoy their look before taking a bite.
