One dog was apparently adopted within a day of the program's launch.

Few things go together as well as pizza and beer. Now, these two crowd-pleasers have something else in common beyond making a solid meal: They’re both helping dogs find homes for adoption.

Back in November, Fargo Brewing Company made national headlines with a novel idea: The North Dakota brewery partnered with the local non-profit 4 Luv of Dog Rescue to put photos of some of the shelters hardest-to-adopt dogs on beer can labels. Now, the Amherst, New York location of Just Pizza & Wing Co.—a pizza franchise 1,000 miles away—is taking a similar approach by attaching flyers with photos of dogs on its pizza boxes.

Mary Alloy, who runs the pizza joint with her children, told me that the idea didn’t specifically come from Fargo Brewing—despite making for a great coincidence. Instead, it stems from her volunteer work with the Niagara Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). She says that Kimberly LaRussa, an SPCA event coordinator, had seen a pizza shop in Pennsylvania was putting flyers for lost dogs on pizza boxes and figured the idea could work for dogs in need of adoption as well.

“I just couldn't wait,” Alloy told CNN, reflecting on her reaction when LaRussa texted her the idea. “We are all animal lovers here, so I got permission from the franchise to do it and immediately got to work.”

The Niagara SPCA announced the partnership last Friday, and Just Pizza & Wing Co. began attaching the “Please adopt me!” flyers to boxes that same day. “We've had a tremendous amount of interest and support from the community and beyond since the story went viral on Friday,” LaRussa told the news site. “Many people want to order a pizza just to get the shelter dog photo, other pizzerias have offered to put flyers on their pizza boxes, and so many people are tagging their friends and family.”

Alloy added that the pizzeria went through nearly a week’s worth of boxes on the first day of the promotion, and by the next day, a 6-month-old puppy named Larry had reportedly already been adopted. Meanwhile, to sweeten the deal, Just Pizza & Wing Co. is also offering up a $50 gift certificate to anyone who adopts a dog through the program.

Apparently, LaRussa told CNN that next up is flyers for adoptable cats. Your move, breweries!
