The film, starring Mamoudou Athie, Courtney B. Vance, and Niecy Nash, will be available to stream March 27.

After Ugly Delicious premiered its second season on Friday, Netflix has more exciting food-adjacent news. Today, the streaming platform released the official trailer for Uncorked, an upcoming drama directed by Prentice Penny. The film follows Elijah (played by Mamoudou Athie), who dreams of becoming a master sommelier but whose father, Louis (Courtney B. Vance), wants him to take over the family’s barbecue business in Memphis.

“Once I knew the father was going to run a BBQ stand, it felt interesting to pair him with wine,” Penny told Food & Wine. “The ironic part is that food and wine are perfect pairings, but the father and the son aren’t.”

The father and son are at odds in the very first scene in the trailer where they disagree over how to cook ribs. Shortly after, Elijah tells his family over dinner about his plans to pursue sommelier training. “I thought you said you weren’t going to let this wine thing mess with your work,” Louis says.

DLynn Proctor, an associate producer on the film and sommelier, worked to shape Elijah’s experience as a sommelier, making sure the character “exude[d] that he was in fact an individual who was living hospitality and service.”

“Whether or not his character passed any exams or conquered any goals, he needed to know and understand hospitality,” Proctor says. “There is a certain flow to restaurants, and hotels, and banquet service, and fine dining; so once there was a mastery of those aspects, then Elijah could excel at the next level(s) of wine.”

As the trailer goes on, we do see Elijah progress in his studies. He flips through flashcards, and goes head to head with a classmate to identify a Chardonnay. He also leaves Memphis and travels to France. Penny says that they filmed in Paris, including the Musée d'Orsay, along with Chablis as well. An airport scene between Elijah and his mother, Sylvia (Niecy Nash), shows her encouraging him to live his life the way he wants.

“My whole life, I’ve been told what my future was gonna look like,” Elijah says in a voiceover, as Louis worries aloud to Sylvia, “if he don’t take over the stand, who’s gonna carry it on when I’m gone?”

Ultimately, Elijah and Louis’ standoff will be forced to a halt because of a tragedy, and it’s not clear from the trailer what that tragedy is. But Penny hopes the film will encourage family members to be more open with each other.

“I hope audiences take home that it’s constantly important for family members to always communicate no matter how hard it is—especially fathers and sons,” Penny says. “Men have tendency to keep their emotions and feelings close to their chest. I hope this movie makes them share a little more.”

Uncorked will premiere on Netflix on March 27.
