McDonald's Has Finally Chosen a Chicken Sandwich to Battle Popeyes and Chick-fil-A
Yes, everyone is hoping 2021 will be a lot different than 2020, but at least one thing is here to stay—and you probably won't be too upset about it… The chicken sandwich wars are alive and well, and McDonald's has announced they have a major new entry coming our way soon.
After a year and a half of discussion in the wake of Popeyes' chicken sandwich success and Chick-fil-A's continued sales strength, McDonald's is finally ready to launch a nationwide—and apparently permanent—new chicken sandwich that the chain hopes adheres to customers' current sensibilities.
"The new sandwich features a brand new crispy, juicy, tender fillet made with all-white meat chicken that's sure to capture the hearts and tastebuds of chicken enthusiasts across America," McDonald's wrote in today's announcement. Plus, as we've all learned, a great chicken sandwich is about more than just chicken, so the standard version of this new "Crispy Chicken Sandwich" will also be "topped with our crinkle cut pickles and served on a new toasted, buttered potato roll." (Sound familiar, Popeyes fans?)
And that's not all: McDonald's is also offering two variations on the new menu item: Spicy and Deluxe. The Spicy Chicken Sandwich is just like the regular one but with a Spicy Pepper Sauce (capitalization theirs, not mine). Meanwhile, the Deluxe Chicken Sandwich is served with shredded lettuce, Roma tomatoes and mayo.
"We've heard our customers loud and clear, and we know they're craving more chicken options," Linda VanGosen, McDonald's vice president of menu innovation, stated. "We're confident all chicken fans—from traditionalists to spice enthusiasts—will discover a new menu favorite they'll come back for time and time again."
Speaking of "time and time again," McDonald's explains that this new Crispy Chicken Sandwich "is joining our roster of long-time favorites like the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Egg McMuffin and Filet-O-Fish sandwiches"—which sounds about as permanent as a menu item can be (until it isn't, of course). But there's no "limited time only" mentioned here; after a lot of swings, McDonald's seems confident this might be the one. The chain previously tried to appease chicken enthusiasts with a more standard Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich back in September of 2019, followed by a December 2019 test of a chicken sandwich that appears very similar to this forthcoming one.
Mark your calendar: These new chicken sandwiches are slated to arrive on February 24.
