‘Magic Mike’-Like Brunch Comes to Washington, DC
The restaurant business can be extremely competitive, especially during the all-important Sunday bunch rush, meaning it never hurts to have a gimmick to help drive in more customers – something like, I don’t know, a bunch of male strippers?
Washington, DC’s SAX Restaurant & Lounge – a place where diners can chow down on "contemporary French-American cuisine while enjoying choreographed dance sets and aerialists,” typically of the female gender – has recently introduced SIR Sundays, billed as the city’s first all-male burlesque brunch. The event’s website promises, “This electrifying show brings together some of the hottest men in the … area for a theatrical experience that will leave you begging for more. Dancers, Aerialists, Pole Performers, Games, Unlimited Mimosas, Food, Go Go Boys, and Table Service studs, all in one ticket price!” Yes, definitely don’t go somewhere else where they charge for mimosas by the glass or go go boys by the butt shimmy!
The Washington Post’s Jessica Contrera dropped into SAX for Sir’s inaugural run this past Sunday (possibly after standing up in the middle of a meeting and declaring, “I’ll take that assignment!”) The sold out $50 - $65 event (which is also sold out for the next two Sundays) featured back-to-back two hour performances, one at 11am and one at 2pm. As the first session got rolling, Contrera described the scene, “The audience howls. They take bites of their Gruyère quiches. They howl more. There are 125 guests at the sold-out brunch, mostly women in their 20s, 30s and 40s, dressed like this is any old Sunday outing. A few pretended that it was.”
One routine in particular is said to be “just like ‘Magic Mike XXL,’ the 2015 sequel to ‘Magic Mike,’ the 2012 Channing Tatum movie about male strippers” except with food that one guest labeled as “not great.” I’ll be honest: I can picture the food better than the dance routine. Though at one point, Contrera describes the club’s dancers as “Ryan-Gosling-level-attractive,” which at least helps me picture these guys as all being far better looking than I am.
If a male stripper brunch is up your alley, SIR Sundays are said to be continuing at SAX for as long as the experiment proves successful. Sounds like as long as Washington, DC doesn’t ban the mimosa, you’ll be able to drop by for a while.
