Although Girl Scout Cookie season is still a long way off, there’s already a new cookie to look forward to.

On August 18, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) announced Toast-Yay!, a “French toast–inspired cookie dipped in delicious icing and full of flavor in every bite.” Yes, French toast-inspired—and it will be available in select areas starting with the 2021 season, which kicks off nationally in January.

I tasted the Toast-Yay! cookies for myself and found them to be crunchy and generously sized—for comparison, they’re bigger than both Thin Mints and Samoas/Caramel deLites. They’re shaped like little pieces of toast and have a slick of icing on one side.

As for the flavor? The taste (and smell) is very cinnamon-y, and with the combination of the icing, it reminded me of a cinnamon bun. It’s the first time Girl Scouts has offered a French toast-flavored cookie, but if French toast isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other flavors to choose from. The lineup for 2021 also includes the new Lemon-Ups, a “crispy lemon cookie baked with messages inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs” that launched this past January.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, GSUSA launched a national online platform in March called Girl Scouts Cookie Care, allowing customers to not only order cookies straight to their door, but also to donate cookies to “first responders, volunteers, and local causes,” per the announcement. There will be sales through online platforms during the 2021 season, as well as “virtual cookie booths" on social media, and options for socially distant or contactless sales and delivery too—depending on local guidelines, "in-person sales may also be available in certain areas."

If you’re planning on buying cookies this upcoming season, get in contact with your local Girl Scout council, which can provide you with both sale dates—nationally, cookie season runs between January and April, but timing varies locally—as well as which cookies will be available in your area.
