Variety packs are both a gift and a curse. They save us from the boredom of a single flavor, but the price of this assortment is that, inevitably, one variety is not to your taste and taunts you uneaten from your shelf. (Throw out that amber ale. You’re never drinking it!) Well, for 2020, Frito-Lay is giving everyone the gift of freedom from the shame of unwanted snacks: They’ve announced a new “Make Your Own” Variety Pack.

The concept is simple: Frito-Lay already has its own direct-to-consumer online shop, Snacks.com, where fans are able to order goods straight from the source. Since everything is being shipped from a Frito-Lay warehouse anyway, this new “Make Your Own” feature just requires a bit of extra legwork to put a mix of snack-sized bags in a single Variety Pack-branded box. To create your mix, just go to Snacks.com/VarietyPack. Frito-Lay says the option is currently available in 24 states on the eastern side of the U.S., but will rollout nationwide at some point next year. Once in, customers can pick any 20 snack bags they want from over 40 options, including different varieties of Lay’s, Doritos, Cheetos, Ruffles, Fritos, SunChips, and more. Yes, you can even choose 20 different selections for your custom 20-count pack. And in the end, no matter what you choose, your cost will be a flat $10 (plus any shipping costs).

“Our fans have asked for a way to make their own Frito-Lay Variety Pack for years, and we are thrilled to be able to provide them with this option on Snacks.com,” Rachel Ferdinando, Frito-Lay North America’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said in the announcement. “During such a time when the world needs joy now more than ever, we are continuing to listen to our consumers and find new ways to create more smiles.”

Interestingly enough, Frito-Lay mentioned that the pandemic appears to be responsible for a significant uptick in Variety Pack sales. “With approximately 42 percent of adults working from home full time and millions of children attending school virtually, variety is a key purchase driver when it comes to choosing what snacks to stock up on,” the company writes. “Frito-Lay Variety Pack has seen significant growth in 2020 with a 12 percent sales increase since March.” Overall, online snack sales have doubled since last year, according to the brand.

Meanwhile, Snacks.com a lot more than just snacks for the holiday season: Last month, Frito-Lay added a brand new online merch shop where chip fans can grab gear like Doritos sweaters and Cheetos onesies.
