Will the Ace of Cakes make his own wedding dessert?
There's no bigger occasion that calls for a cake than a wedding, and there's no doubt one of the biggest names in baking, Duff Goldman, has created his fair share of showstopping confections for newlyweds. But now, the "Ace of Cakes" and frequent Food Network baking competition judge will have the opportunity to whip up the cake of his own wedding day dreams after announcing his engagement to his girlfriend, writer Johnna Colbry, on Instagram yesterday afternoon.
"I am absolutely in love with Johnna (@letushear) and I can’t imagine living another day without her in my life," Goldman said in a post to the social networking site. Apparently, it wasn't a long-though-out gesture, either. "I didn’t plan this out, it just happened and it was so glaringly obvious that I couldn’t have stopped it if I wanted to. I asked her to marry me. She said yes. I cannot imagine a state of happiness that is more intense than whatever I’m feeling right now."
The spontaneity of the moment shows in the couple's choice of engagement ring as well, with the famous pastry chef opting for butcher's twine rather than precious metals or stones.
According to the tagged photo, the happy event took place in Santa Monica, CA which is not all too far from the chef's Cakemix studio which houses the west coast iteration of his Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes, the subject of the Ace of Cakes TV series that made Goldman a household name.
Of course, this early on it remains to be seen whether Goldman will opt to bake his own wedding cake (or groom's cake, for that matter) or whether he'll take the day off and let someone else do the heavy lifting. That begs the question: Who else on earth is worthy of baking a cake for the Ace himself? Mary Berry, we might need your help on this one!
