And hot fried chicken is involved.
Dominique Ansel, the pastry chef and Daniel alum—better known to the masses as inventor of the cronut—is foraying into lunch at his first sit-down restaurant called 189 by Dominique Ansel, which opened in Los Angeles last November. It’s here that Ansel expanded beyond his signature kouign amanns, which are a lesser-known French pastry not unlike a croissant, but with a hyper-caramelized crust. (Apparently, Ansel prefers it to his viral Cronuts.)
Starting March 12 through the 16, you’ll be able to get Dominique’s Kouign Amann—abbreviated DKA—in the context of a hot fried chicken sandwich: cut open and embracing the crisp jags of a fried chicken patty, slathered in spicy chili sauce. If Ansel’s previous viral creations provide any precedence, we’re guessing this will be a hit, too.
But this is not a social media ploy. It’s about expanding service beyond dinner—189 by Dominique Ansel is currently only open in the evenings and for weekend brunch. Maybe, we’re told, lunch might be in the books if this goes well. Ansel has done playful pop-ups like these before: For Mardi Gras, for example, tables were covered in newspaper to set the scene for a New Orleans-style crab boil, with crab, andouille and corn cobs.
Starting next Monday for the event being called "Dom’s Burgers," there will be picnic blankets and turf on the floor as a gesture to welcome in spring. (Los Angeles enjoys eternal summer, but no matter, we’re still a fan of rituals.) Chairs will still be available for those who don’t feel comfortable ditching them. The week-long, barbecue-themed menu will feature three new burgers special for the occasion, and a rainbow of popsicles: horchata, melon mint and mango passionfruit. There will even be a lemonade stand inside the restaurant.
Don’t get too attached to these offerings, however; they’re set to disappear by the 16. But that’s all the more incentive to visit before then. See the full menu below.
