Chrissy Teigen Reveals the Best Way to Eat a McDonald's Hamburger
Plus, the model and TV host gives us her tips on where to eat after awards shows.
She’s the supreme ruler of food Twitter. She’s the fast food loving, avocado-swimsuit wearing, cookbook writing powerhouse that has basically taken over the internet and won our hearts in the process. She’s Chrissy Teigen. Her love of McDonald’s is already well known, but now the Sport’s Illustrated model has once again teamed up with the fast food chain to bring you an awards season commercial, which takes place at an a nondescript awards ceremony where the audience is in need of a snack during the (often overly long) proceedings. Teigen knows the solution: the McDonald’s $1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu. To celebrate the release of the commercial—which will air during the Academy Awards—Teigen chatted with Food & Wine about her favorite McDonald's meal, the menu she’d love to curate, where she eats after award shows.
What’s your favorite item on the McDonald’s dollar menu?
"There’s nothing like a McDonald’s Dr. Pepper. Even with breakfast. I used to do the Minute Maid orange juice thing, now I’m just like, screw it. It is my true pregnancy vice. There are so many things that are taken away from us. It’s my dessert for everything.
Nothing reheats better than a McDonald’s cheeseburger. I put it in for 35 seconds, still in the paper, and it comes out like a soft, delicious, warm pillow. It’s perfect. I swear, anytime I order them, I get four at a time and keep them in the fridge and then just heat them up, and it is truly the perfect snack. I get it with hot mustard because hot mustard is my favorite McDonald’s dipping sauce."
What was it like filming a commercial for McDonald’s?
"I looked around and decided, this is a dream come true. I have been to countless McDonald’s auditions. I started auditioning for commercials when I was [around] 18 and they were always my favorite auditions to go to because truly, there were just piles and piles of hundreds of hamburgers, and you got to bite into it and make the face. I went to every audition, just knowing that I could eat McDonald’s.
Our [commercial] was a mock Oscars and it was so cool sitting with people that I truly used to work with. I knew the girl who was sitting behind me. We shot in L.A., and I grew up in this commercial scene of auditioning all the time. There were people I recognized from other commercials, and they were giving me tips because I am by no means an actress, so it was cool to sit with them and talk with them, and really try to show what these awards shows are really like, which is that you’re starving."
Do go out to eat after every awards show?
"You can’t ever fit anything in your bag, and then once you get there, it’s really hard to get access to the green room. Unless you’re presenting or you won something, it’s really hard—or unless you’re pregnant honestly. I can just sneak in the back now and everyone is like “Oh god, let her through.” But it’s tough to get any food. You end up starving. Everyone likes to munch on something while watching television, it’s a natural thing. It’s hard to go to a place like that and not munch on something.
We make dinner reservations downtown, but more likely, it’s grabbing something on the way home. There’s an amazing flatbread pizza place that so many people go to after [events]. It’s really casual, so it’s cool to see everyone all dressed up. Places like Mr. Chow and Craig’s always fill up really fast."
Where do you like to eat in the airport?
"McDonald’s of course—I’m a big breakfast sandwich person. I cannot turn down a sausage McMuffin with egg. Sometimes I will get two sausage patties, or two complete sausage McMuffins with egg and merge them together. I get a Dr. Pepper with it.
I love airport eating. I love eating on the airplane. I always wanted to have a guide to airport eating. I think a dream of mine would be able to curate my own menu for an airline."
Are you having any pregnancy cravings at the moment?
"I think with Luna, they were much more specific. I really wanted meat and milk with her. I wanted sour candy. Now I’m entering that phase with crazy acid reflux. It’s not a bad thing because I can only eat pasta and potatoes. I can do hamburgers, but I can’t have Thai food and I love crazy spicy food. I definitely am craving sandwiches a lot, like deli sandwiches. I feel like little boy isn’t as picky as Luna was. It’s funny to see her out now. She’ll eat anything."
