Like every other chef- and restaurant-obsessed person in New York, I'm eagerly awaiting our Best New Chefs celebration tonight to sample the stellar food from 20 of our fantastic former BNCs, including Daniel Boulud (from our first-ever crop of winners in 1988) and Tom Colicchio (who, before he became the Top Chef honcho, picked up the honor in 1991) to last year's winners like April Bloomfield at the Spotted Pig and Gavin Kaysen at Café Boulud. I'm also looking forward to talking with the class of 2008 BNCs, who I got a chance to meet at an exclusive party last night hosted by the gracious Bloomfield and her Spotted Pig partner, Ken Friedman (it featured not one, but two whole roast pigs). If last night's conversation is any indicator, expect to hear about star farmers, giant oysters (as well as mini ones), absinthe bootleggers in New Orleans, the chummy (and musical chairs-like) Philly chef scene, and oddly enough, Guns N' Roses.
