Nearly half of the bars on this year’s list are different from 2019.

Bars tend to gravitate towards one of two extremes: Places where it doesn’t matter what beer you’re drinking as long as you’re drinking and places that pride themselves on offering the best beer options available. The latter group used to be hard to find, drawing in curious craft beer drinkers from across the city and beyond. But thankfully, now, good beer can be found at more bars than ever before.

Still, that doesn’t mean that the best of the best doesn’t shine above the rest, and once again, as it has since 2012, the site CraftBeer.com—which is run by the craft beer trade group the Brewers Association— compiled a list of the “Great American Beer Bars,” a.k.a. the best bar in every state according to reader feedback. “Readers were asked to nominate their favorite craft beer bar in their state,” the site explains, and then, “Over 6,000 votes were cast during the voting period (December 13, 2019 – January 6, 2020).” Bars were also contacted before being included.

Proving just how much the craft beer bar scene continues to expand, nearly half of the selections included in this year’s list are different from the 2019 list, and overall, CraftBeer.com says about 40 percent have never been on one of these year-end lists before. For instance, looking at New York, my previous home state has had four different bars listed over the past four years—and all of them deserve recognition. The fact that the list changes so much year to year is actually a great way to find more great bars: When checking out the winners, don’t be afraid to look at previous years as well.

“You know a great beer bar when you’re in one. There’s something about the beer menu, the food, the service, the atmosphere, and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with other beer lovers who were drawn there for the same reasons,” Jess Baker, editor in chief of CraftBeer.com, said in announcing the results. “Great beer bars, like the ones our readers nominate, are instrumental in growing this wonderful community that celebrates small and independent U.S. craft brewers.”
