Anthony Bourdain’s Latest Comic Book Series Is Available for Pre-Order
If you're looking for even more ways to get your Anthony Bourdain fix, your insatiable appetite is about to be satisfied. This time out, the chef-turned-media mogul has chosen to return to the written page—but with some pictures too—penning a new four-part comic book series called Hungry Ghosts set to be released next week.
Of course, everything Bourdain tackles has to have a bit of a cerebral approach, so these are no ordinary comic books full of some sort of crime-fighting culinary team. Instead, they’re described by the publisher Dark Horse thusly: “Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food.” The first book, set to be released on January 31, includes two tales: “With bad consequence, a ramen chef refuses to help a beggar, and a band of pirates get more (and less) than they were bargaining for after their encounter with a drowning woman turns ghastly.”
All four comics are currently available for pre-order for $3.99 each. However, only the first one comes out at the end of the month. The remaining three will be released on February 28, March 28, and April 25 respectively.
Bourdain didn’t do all the writing alone, and though he’s a talented guy, he also didn’t handle the illustrations. (Wouldn’t that be something if he had?!) The project is co-written with Joel Rose. The pair has worked together previously on the graphic novels (basically comic books, right??) Get Jiro and its prequel Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi which were released in 2012 and 2015. Meanwhile, different artists are used across the four comics: Alberto Ponticelli, Vanesa Del Rey, Mateus Santolouco, Leonardo Manco, Paul Pope, Sebastian Cabrol, Francesco Francavilla and Irene Koh.
The comics are also said to be for “for mature readers.” But you knew that: Anthony Bourdain is nothing if not mature.
