News This Pennsylvania Winery Just Released a Perfectly Named Wine for 2020 "Sh!tshow" is "a fine wine for the times." Food & Wine's Editorial Guidelines Updated on December 16, 2022 Share Tweet Pin Email Grovedale Winery currently sells around two dozen different wines, ranging from both red and white blends, to a bubbly Grüner Veltliner, to Blackberry Sangria. But one of their current offerings seems especially well-suited to this still-terrifying, eternally frustrating landfill of a year. The tiny Pennsylvania winery has recently released an oak barrel-aged blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and they've called it… Sh!tshow. I mean, is there any other two-syllable word that summarizes 2020 so accurately and succinctly? "It was actually the idea of our winemaker, who had said it as a joke at first," Grovedale Winery Owner Jeff Homer said. "When we floated the idea to people, they immediately started laughing. We lift a glass together to celebrate life's good moments, and we thought having a wine for the 'sh!tshow' moments of life would help bring a smile. At the time, we were thinking of situations like your friend goes through a divorce, or when your project at work fails. There's no way we could have predicted how chaotic 2020 would become, but it does seem like it's the perfect gift to capture the times. That's why we made our tagline 'A fine wine for the times'." The wine, which was officially released earlier this year, is sold through both Grovedale Winery's online store, and through its own dedicated website. While you're debating how many bottles of Sh!tshow you need to get through the 65 miserable days that are left in this miserable year, you can choose whether you're drinking your way out of a political, personal, or professional sh!tshow, or just through "the 2020 sh!tshow" itself—which pretty much includes all of those other categories, too. "While we want to make people smile, we also understand that there's nothing funny about going through a really difficult and dark time," Homer added. "We're actively working on a non-profit collaboration that will see a portion of all proceeds from Sh!tshow Wine going towards increasing mental health awareness and helping people access assistance. Ultimately, we want to give people a way to laugh at the different sh!tshows we all face but also to make sure that people know they truly are not alone." Unfortunately for non-U.S. residents who are being broiled by their own personal dumpster fires, this wine can currently only be shipped to customers who live in the States. "We recognize that Sh!tshows exist around the world, and don't worry, we have plans to come to your glorious country in the future," Grovedale wrote on its website. "What we have learned is that no matter what country we call home, we really are all in this together!" Let's all hope that 2021—and the wines it inspires—are all slightly more optimistic.
