We’re at the peak of summer now, and the hot, humid weather has taken hold. With all our best intentions to keep socially distant, we’re spending more time dining on decks and patios and having happy hour on stoops and balconies to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. Of course, since we’re feasting outside more often, so are our summer nemeses: mosquitoes

It’s true that the smell of bug spray and citronella candles does have a certain ambiance. But that nice glass of rosé, the smoked meat you’ve been carefully monitoring all day, or special batch of summer oysters you ordered and shucked are all best enjoyed without a cloud of fragrance. So what to do about the bloodthirsty pests?

Thermacell has a variety of products for mosquito protection, and the best option for summer evenings outdoors is the mosquito lantern. It works in minutes, with a small butane cartridge and a repellent mat that, once heated, releases the repellent out to a 15-foot radius. It’s notably six times more effective than citronella candles, is completely scent-free, and lasts for anywhere from 12 to 120 hours (depending on the size cartridge you order).

The lantern has become a regular fixture on our patio, a shared space behind our New Jersey apartment building normally buzzing with bugs. The protection lasts the entire afternoon and evening, with no bites in sight (and normally I’d be covered). The lantern light is just enough to enjoy evening drinks and food but not so bright it attracts more pests. I immediately ordered two more to send to my parents, who live in a wooded area in Georgia always ripe with mosquitoes. They are happy to report they have spent multiple nights out on their deck with no problems at all.

If you’re planning on more time outdoors, whether it’s camping in the woods, family time at the beach, or weeknight dinners outside, this repellent tool is key. Order it on Amazon, along with refills for the field and pads, but don’t delay. The lanterns sold out once already this summer, and with their great ratings and efficiency, they’re sure to sell out again.
