Google’s annual “Year in Search” brought us the top recipe trends of 2020, but it also revealed which gift ideas proved to be the most popular, including in the kitchen gadget and appliance category. Unsurprisingly, classics like KitchenAid’s stand mixer and Le Creuset’s Dutch oven were among the top searches—but in true 2020 form, a few unexpected terms popped up on this year’s list.
According to Google, searches for baking were up 25 percent this year, which was perhaps evidenced by the great yeast shortage we saw this spring. Inquiries for cotton candy machines also surged by 42 percent, no doubt showing that parents were on the hunt for a fun activity that could be done indoors.
Searches for coffee makers increased to an all-time high, spiking upwards by a whopping 33 percent. No wonder three out of the top 10 most searched gadgets involve coffee. (Unfortunately, the No. 1 item, the Mr. Coffee Iced Coffee Maker, is sold out practically everywhere—but there is a limited supply at some Target stores.)
Breville’s Nespresso Essenza Mini rang in at No. 3. The automatic machine comes with an Aeroccino milk frother, which can precisely heat up milk to a creamy cafe-like consistency that’s hard to replicate. At No. 7 was Keurig’s K-Duo Coffee Maker that brews up to 12 cups of coffee grounds as well as single-serve K-cups.
Rae Dunn’s collection of ceramic cups, plates, and cutlery also impressed this year. If you’re looking for something to sum up 2020, consider the “UGH” mug—no explanation is needed when gifting this piece.
Other sought-after products included charcuterie boards, mason jars, and Crock Pots. Below, check out 10 of the most Googled kitchen gift ideas—many of which can arrive on your doorstep before Christmas.
