Even diehard baseball fans like yours truly (go Cardinals!) are willing to admit that half the fun of baseball isn’t baseball itself, but all the peripheral things happening at a game. It’s a sport that moves at its own pace, allowing commentators to cover all sorts of barely baseball-related topics and giving hungry fans time to grab dogs and other traditional ballpark snacks.

Yesterday, all these things came together in amazing harmony as a young Los Angeles Angels fan stole the show trying to gobble down a hot dog while his hometown team crushed the Minnesota Twins.

In baseball, when you advance the runner at the expense of the batter, that’s known as a sacrifice, and this kid, knowing the importance of that delicious hot dog meat, pulled off the play perfectly. He ditches the worthless bun so he can make the big score and get directly to hot dog heaven.

I think this little man may have a future in the MLB. Or at least in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Hey, a sport’s a sport.
