All pandemic long, I've been heralding the end of the workday by making spritzes with Ghia, a non-alcoholic aperitif. Having been burned by others in the category, I'll admit approached it with some skepticism. While many NA spirits go overboard with adaptogens, sugar, CBD, or esoteric extracts to compensate for the lack of booze, Ghia's figgy, citrus-forward, gently floral flavor profile––not to mention the truly stunning packaging––nails both subtlety and fanfare. It's got more pizazz than juice but prompts less judgment from your dentist than, say, a soda. Le Spritz, the brand's first foray into cans, packs more of that same magic formula but optimized for the impending picnic and patio season.

Warm weather and canned beverages go together well, like people who have been cooped up in their apartments for over a year and shots from Pfizer. The attraction is undeniable. But while there's no shortage of cocktails and spiked seltzers in cans that you can pick up at your corner liquor store, I've still been somewhat underwhelmed by the complexity of readily available NA canned drinks. When developing Ghia, founder Melanie Masarin was inspired by "summers near the Mediterranean, where Aperitivo is a way of life."

True to that premise, Ghia makes fantastic use of gentian root, an ingredient that lies at the core of many of our favorite aperitifs, from amaro to suze––it's quite bitter, and can sometimes be almost heady in its herbaceousness. Le Spritz thoughtfully includes yuzu, rosemary extract, and elderflower to temper down that natural bitterness, but still tastes complex enough to be a craft cocktail you'd order at a bar. I guess what I'm saying is, I consider it to be a critical part of our exciting, collective journey to move away from relegating folks who aren't drinking (For whatever reason! You don't need to put a label on it!) to Shirley Temples. 

Before you ask––but still, can I add booze to my Ghia spritz? I mean, sure, I guess. Who am I to tell you what to do with your Saturday afternoon? But as a person who definitely enjoys a stiff drink, I honestly haven't felt the need to. Sometimes, things can just be a little simpler, you know?
