Cats and cucumbers have been having an amazing run. Actually, correction: Videos of cats and cucumbers have had an amazing run. Cat are probably not doing so hot since owners around the world suddenly decided to check if they too can freak out their kitty simply by setting a cucumber down next to him.

If you’re not familiar with the phenomenon swirling around the Internet for the last few months now, you can get caught up extremely quickly with the handy compilation video above. What you’ll find is that cucumbers scaring cats (which even has its own subreddit) is pretty self-explanatory.

So just why are cats so afraid of cucumbers? The Telegraph spoke to an expert. “I think that the reaction is due to the novelty and unexpectedness of finding an unusual object secretly placed whilst their heads were down in the food bowl,” said Dr. Roger Mugford, a specialist in animal behavior. “So not an inherent feature of cucumbers, just their unusual context.”

If that’s all it is then why can’t I get anyone to join my “carrots scaring cats” Facebook group?
