Life is full of deep reflective questions. Why are we here? What happens when we die? What is the sound of one hand clapping? Let me add another to the list for you to ponder: Is Guy Fieri without his signature look still Guy Fieri?
Perhaps tormented by this question herself, maybe even seeded with some doubt, CBS News’s Andrea Park recently asked Fieri about his appearance in an interview published earlier this week. “Everyone knows you for your signature look,” she started. “Do you ever get tired of it? Like, ‘Ugh, I want to dye my hair black. I want to not spike it today. I want to shave my facial hair. I want a change.’”
It’s a fair question, albeit a touch condescending. It would be weird to ask Mickey Mouse if he ever gets tired of being a mouse. “Do you ever just want to rip off your big round ears?” Granted, even tangentially comparing Guy Fieri to Mickey Mouse is also a touch condescending, but I guess that’s why I wasn’t doing the interview.
Needless to say, Fieri took a somewhat defensive stance. “I don't do anything that I ‘have’ to do. I really don't buy into that,” the celebrity chef responded. “I know we're doing a photo shoot today and I didn't bleach my hair so I won't have roots. I don't really give a s***. Well, I shouldn't say that, but I don't get too tied up.”
Later, Fieri presented an even more humanizing side by simply pointing out how much of his look is simply pragmatic at this point. “Right now we don't want to interrupt the shooting of ‘Diners, Drive-ins and Dives’ because there's so many shows that have to meld together,” he answered. “I know people want there to be more sensationalism behind the look, but there's no design. Trust me.”
That said, if you are one of those people who has taken issue with Fieri’s ‘90s surfer kid hair, he did leave the door open for a possible change. “There's been quite a few conversations between me and my wife; she'd like to see my hair brown again,” he was also quoted as saying. “So who knows what will happen.”
