Best Coffee Shops in Chicago
Like many cities in America, Chicago is fueled by coffee. In these excellent shops and roasteries, you can get down to business with the free wifi, or you can catch up with a friend and split a pastry. Drink up.
Bow Truss Coffee Roasters
Each of the eight Chicago locations of this small chain channels the same breezy, hipster-cabin feel with rustic textures and a reliance on natural lighting. The coffee is excellent – even more so when paired with an old-fashioned donut.
This tiny, hipster coffee shop shares a space with Green Street Smoked Meats and is known for it’s oft photographed-and-grammed Military latte. Surprisingly the warm backyard barbecue atmosphere of Green Street doesn’t clash with the militant-yet-approachable vibes of Sawada. Classic coffee drinks like the Americano and cappuccino are up for grabs alongside a selection of what they call ‘boozy steamers’ – spirits combined with steamed milk, spices, coffee or cider.
112 N Green St, Chicago, IL 60607
This unassuming chain of coffee roasters and cafés is worth a stop, whether you have time to hang out or are just looking to grab a drink on the go. With a unique set of offerings – including the delicious, milkshake-y draft latte – its one downfall could be that it doesn’t offer wifi, but if you’re looking to enjoy the company of another, no wifi is no problem.
Big Shoulders Coffee
Between River West and Noble Square is Big Shoulders – an open, airy coffee shop with limited seating. Its small batch, house roasted coffees and marshmallow lattes topped with a skewered, toasted marshmallow are the main attraction. The large windows let in a ton of natural light, keeping the place bright and conducive for working and reading.

Gaslight Coffee Roasters
With an industrial feel, a lot of seating, and fantastic coffee and food, Gaslight is a cool coffee shop café at the intersection of Fullerton and Milwaukee. Large windows give the space tons of natural light so you can get your fill of vitamin D without being outside. You could be here all day, easily starting the morning with a cappuccino, grabbing a sandwich for lunch, and heading into the evening with a warm, flavorful chai.

Asado Coffee Company
Asado has a bright orange, yellow and blue façade that sticks out in the neutral brick fronts prevalent in Lakeview. Roasting their beans in house and using an extremely high-end espresso machine called the Mirage – this small coffee house is great for many reasons. Friendly staff, sugary sweet café con leches, and the smell of perfectly roasted beans make for a nice visit, whether you stay or take your drink for the road.

The Wormhole Coffee
This laid back, 80s themed coffee shop in Wicker Park is complete with a DeLorean, Star Wars memorabilia, and a working PlayStation. If that’s not enough to make it your new favorite coffee shop, surely the reasonably priced drinks, pastries, and friendly, busy atmosphere will change your mind.

Osmium Coffee Bar
Eclectic and funky, with bright steam-punk scenes taking up most of the wall space, Osmium is a fun coffee shop brewing up locally roasted Dark Matter Coffee. Try the spicy Mayan mocha or the popular iced coffee and don’t forget to check out the baked goods, sourced locally. When the weather permits, head to the back patio and take a seat at one of the colorful picnic tables.
