Calm your inner 6-year-old: Brio, a Vermont-based company wants you to start replacing entire meals with ice cream.
Food items billed as “meal replacements” have become a surprisingly popular category recently, driven by buzzworthy brands like Soylent that claim eating is for suckers stuck in the 20th century, instead encouraging us to get all our nutrition in a single packaged product. But as much as I’ve found my flirtations with Soylent oddly addictive, flavor-wise, it resembles your morning Rice Krispies and milk put into a blender.
The makers of Brio say to hell with that. Their “nutritionally complete” take on ice cream comes in flavors like Very Strawberry, Dark Chocolate and Tropical Mango, and unlike what your mom always told you, the brand claims these are more than just desserts. They can serve as post-workout snacks or even mini-meals.
According to Brio, they’ve “hacked ice cream” adding a laundry list of additional bells and whistles like antioxidants, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and probiotics – all with “35 percent fewer calories and 50 percent less fat than super premium ice cream brands.” Packing so much punch into a worthy scoop wasn’t easy according to Brio President Arnie Koss. “We had to overcome coloration issues, and we had to overcome off-flavors, and textures,” he told Food Navigator USA. “It was an avalanche of challenge, but we worked really hard to keep all the nutrition in the ice cream, and still produce something that tastes really good.”
Though Brio has been on the market for about a year, the product is vastly expanding its distribution to markets across the country for 2016 – specifically targeting mainstream grocers in the Northeast and Texas. So next time you’re debating where to go to lunch, maybe you can just hit your local supermarket’s freezer section.
