When it comes to culinary leanings, there’s the fancy foie gras people, and there are laid-back potato chip people – but can the two meet?
Apparently, yes. Calbee, the Japanese brand that has featured pizza and roast chicken flavors of their potato chips in the past, just launched a beef and foie gras potato chip. Of course besides being the fanciest potato chips ever, they also carry the baggage often associated with foie gras (fatty duck or goose liver)—some people object to the process of force-feeding the birds that’s used to produce it. And if that is a concern, it certainly applies to these chips. They are flavored with real foie flakes, no artificial flavors.
It does seem like part of foie gras’ appeal is the creamy texture. We’re not sure the taste transfers well to a potato chip. For now we’ll stick to sour cream and onion.
