Last February, coconut milk got the call up to the coffee big leagues – landing a permanent place on Starbucks’ menu as a milk alternative. Now, the popular diary replacement is finally coming off the bench, earning a spot in the starting lineup – a drink all its own.
Tomorrow, participating Starbucks across the US and Canada will debut the Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato, billed as the brand’s “first-ever iced espresso beverage to feature our Single Origin Sumatran Coconut Milk.” The drink, which seems like more of a mouthful to say than it is to drink, also features “a hint of White Chocolate Mocha sauce” and ice. From there, the ‘Bucks says, “espresso shots are poured on top of the Coconut Milk, and the beverage is finished with caramel sauce in our classic double crosshatch pattern and a swirl of Mocha sauce for a handcrafted, summery twist on our popular Iced Caramel Macchiato.”
Interestingly, as Consumerist points out, despite coconut milk’s inherent appeal of being dairy-free, the ingredient’s first namesake drink actually contains dairy thanks to its white chocolate mocha sauce. Still, as Starbucks senior product developer Christal Canzler explained, coconut milk can appeal to more than just the lactose intolerant. “Summer is a great time to highlight coconut milk. It’s lighter in body than regular milk, and can be a little more refreshing,” she said.
Added bonus: When the only places left to open new Starbucks are desert islands, this new drink will still be able to locally source its main ingredient.
