At this point we’re used to seeing all sorts of oddball ingredients show up in increasingly extreme beers, but whale vomit brings random to a whole new level.

South Australian brewers have created Moby Dick Ambergris Ale, named for its inclusion of ambergris —which you may know as whale vomit. The beer debuted at the recent Melbourne beer festival, Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular (GABS), by Robe brewers Maris and Kristi Biezaitis.

The ambergris is a solid waxy substance (yum?) that forms in the intestines of sperm whales to aid in the digestion process. When the animal dies, it gets vomited into the ocean.

And while this substance may sound kind of gross to us, it’s actually incredibly valuable and has been used in everything from perfume to medicine for centuries. Go figure.

But what does it taste like? "It tastes a little bit like the sea, it tastes a little bit like marine animals. It's really interesting I think," Kristi Biezaitis was quoted as saying in ABC South East SA.

We think we’ll pass.
