There's Finally a Julia Child Food Trail in Santa Barbara

To kick off the inaugural Santa Barbara Culinary Experience—a weekend in March featuring local chefs, mixologists, and restaurateurs—the event's organizers have crafted a downloadable map featuring Julia Child's favorite restaurants, tacos, candy shops, theaters, and more in the area, and you don't have to be an attendee to access it.

In other words, there's finally a Julia Child food trail that lets fans follow in the footsteps of the longtime Santa Barbara resident and hit up all her favorite spots in the process. The trail includes everything from beaches to trattorias to a Costco in Goleta. ("In-N-Out fries and a Costco hot dog were among her regular favorites," the map cheerily offers.)

The interactive map offers a self-guided tour of some of Julia's most significant locations to eat, drink, walk, and shop all over Santa Barbara County from Santa Ynez Valley to Carpinteria, where she summered as a young girl, according to the site where you can download the map. "Dig into her favorite hot dogs, tacos, martinis, and candy shops—and save time to smell the signature Julia Child roses."

In partnership with the Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts, the SBCE weekend "aims to gather the community and visitors to celebrate the bounty of Santa Barbara's abundant resources found in its local farms, ranches, vineyards and ocean, inspired by the spirit of Julia and her legacy of culinary education." Events include a five-course dinner atBettinawith Chris Bianco of Pizzeria Bianco, a "Julia Child curated" dinner at San Ysidro Ranch, and a beach luncheon featuring Julia Child Award recipients, chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, who received a $50,000 grant in 2018.
