Liana Aghajanian

Detroit-based Liana Aghajanian is an Armenian-American journalist who specializes in reporting stories of international immigrant issues with a focus on food and culture. Her work has appeared in such national and international outlets as The New York Times, Newsweek, The Guardian, BBC, Los Angeles Times, and Al Jazeera America, among others.

Experience

As an Armenian refugee from Tehran growing up in Los Angeles, Liana Aghjanian grappled with issues of identity for much of her life. Journalism afforded her the opportunity to travel the world and tell stories focused on issues of immigration, displacement, and identity. Liana's reporting has taken her to Toronto, London, Istanbul, Ulaanbaatar, Iran, and Detriot, among other places. Her bylines have appeared in The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, Los Angeles Magazine, Marie Claire, Roads & Kingdoms, and others.

Liana is currently working on a book and multimedia project called Dining in Diaspora which documents the complex and disparate Armenian experience in America through food. Excerpts from this project have been featured in Eater, Food52, Taste, Bon Appetit, The Smithsonian, Hour Detroit Magazine, and CNN's Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Education

Liana graduated from California State University, Northridge with a bachelor of arts in journalism.
