Jeffrey Morgenthaler

Jeffrey Morgenthaler is an award-winning bartender and author of two drink books: "The Bar Book" (2014) and "Drinking Distilled: A User's Manual" (2018). Before opening Pacific Standard, his bar and restaurant at Portland, Oregon's KEX Hotel, he ran the seven-time James Beard Award-nominated beverage program at Clyde Common and the highly celebrated basement bar Pepe Le Moko. Morgenthaler's work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wine Enthusiast, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Food52, and MSN. 


Jeffrey Morgenthaler has been bartending professionally since 1996 — from neighborhood taverns and college nightclubs to fine restaurants and upscale cocktail bars. He moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2006 to manage Clyde Common where he popularized barrel-aged cocktails and bottled carbonated cocktails, and created upscale craft cocktail versions of '80s "disco-era" drinks — often credited with modernizing the amaretto sour. In addition to writing about bartending and cocktails on his website, he is a columnist at Playboy and frequently contributes to a number of publications, including Imbibe, The Daily Beast, Fine Cooking, and PUNCH.

Morgenthaler also shares his vast knowledge of bartending and cocktails at industry conventions and symposiums, and regularly judges cocktail competitions such as the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Heaven Hill Bartender of the Year, and Diageo World Class. Voted the ninth most influential bartender in the world on Drinks International, he was named among the 10 most influential bartenders of the past decade by Food & Wine, the top 10 mixologists in the country by Playboy, and the 15 most influential bartenders of the past hundred years by Thrillist.


Jeffrey pursued an undergraduate degree in Interior Architecture.
