I should have trusted my instincts and not baked these in the bottom third of the oven as directed. The cakes had a hard crust on the bottom and were almost burned, while just barely cooked in the middle. I managed to salvage them by scraping off some of it with a sharp knife, but they still turned out rather dry and dense overall. Next time I will bake in the center of my oven. The frosting was delicious and very easy to spread.
