The sort of store bibliophiles dream about is housed in an old glove factory in the shadow of historic Corktown. Row after row of books—more than a million in total—fill four hardwood-floor levels permeated with that wonderful, slightly musty smell of old paper. Selections run the gamut, from topics on fondue to 18th-century woodworking. Biographies alone take up almost the entire third floor. (Want a biography of Dickens? There are about 50 choices.) Run by King himself since opening in 1965, the store also sells rare volumes to collectors the world over.

Tip: Some sections of the store are barely heated, so wear a coat in winter.
