“My mother has always liked tropical drinks. From the Scorpion Bowls she sipped on at Trader Vic’s during her college days in New York to the Chi Chis she ordered while on vacation in Hawaii, she fondly associates the kitsch 1950s cocktails with her father and Road to Bali buddy-duo Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. But it wasn’t until she first tried a Zombie that our house became a pop-up tiki bar. Now when I go home we have at least three different rums stocked at all times as well as a hand-cranked crushed ice machine and specialty syrups and essences. The drink is a complex beast of a cocktail but she enjoys making them almost as much as drinking them, so the rest of the family isn’t about to complain.”—Justine Sterling, Assistant Digital Editor
