Bi-Rite Market; San Francisco

Sam Mogannam, a trained chef, and his brother Raphael took over this Mission District market from their parents more than a decade ago and transformed it from a neighborhood convenience store into a cult grocery. In addition to being one of the first markets in the country to grow some of its own organic produce, Bi-Rite offers fantastic prepared foods, like these F&W staff-favorite Sicilian beef meatballs, made with meat from local farms like Five Dot Ranch, Marin Sun Farms and BN Ranch. In addition to traditional ingredients like Parmigiano-Reggiano, onion, garlic, fresh oregano, thyme and parsley, the beef is mixed with milk-soaked panko and ketchup before it’s shaped into baseball-size meatballs that are baked until tender, and generously topped with homemade marinara sauce.
