Villa Pattono, Piedmont

Pietro Ratti of Piedmont’s historic Renato Ratti winery spent more than five years transforming his family’s country home in the Monferrato wine region into an impressive hotel. Built in the early 1700s, the villa is a fantastic base for winery-hopping. Many original architectural elements remain, like the three-story neo-medieval tower suite (Jay-Z stayed there last year) and restored frescoes on the ceilings of many of its 13 rooms. There’s also a 2,000-bottle cellar stocked with many vintages of Ratti’s Barolos, a pool at vine level and a valet service to take guests into the towns of Asti and Alba. Doubles from $190; villapattono.com.—Megan Krigbaum
