Aspen Highlands, Colorado

Why Go: Those who know Aspen for its celebrity reputation might not realize that the area has four distinct mountains, each with its own personality. The base of Aspen Highlands is three miles from Aspen Village and lacks the glamour of its neighbor, but has incredible terrain and 360-degree views of the Maroon Bells (some of the most photographed peaks in the Rockies). The stunning Highland Bowl—which is 12,000 feet above sea level—is accessible only by hiking or by snowcat ride.

Where to Après: There is not much of a village at the Aspen Highlands base, so plan on heading into Aspen proper for some of the most acclaimed après in the world. Chef Robert McCormick prepares superb farm-to-table cooking at Element 47 restaurant, and Eric’s Bar has billiards and a cigar room. For celebrity sightings, J-Bar at the Hotel Jerome attracts vacationing stars and Aspen homeowners like Jack Nicholson.
