America's Best Ski Resorts

Slide 13 of 21

Alta, Utah

Why Go: One of the few skier-only resorts remaining in the US, Alta is loved for its powder, with an average snowfall of 550 inches a year. The terrain consists mostly of tree-filled glades and wide-open bowls. On a powder day, visitors love Ballroom, a choose-your-own adventure bowl that can be intermediate or traversed for steeper, more expert terrain.

Where to Après: While Alta is not known for its après scene, options are becoming increasingly better since Utah amended its restrictive liquor laws a few years ago. Immediately after skiing, visitors like Goldminer’s Saloon at the Wildcat base area for its comfortable couches, local beers and views of other skiers taking their last runs. The nearby Alta Peruvian Lodge Bar has a fireplace and free hors d’oeuvres and popcorn for late-afternoon snack cravings.
