Lauded for its simple, no-frills Tuscan fare, Sostanza is also known as Il Troia (the trough) because its long, wooden communal tables are always packed with diners enjoying the same signature dishes. Open since 1869, the old-fashioned trattoria has a bustling open kitchen and walls lined with autographed celebrity photos (past guests include Steven Spielberg and Neil Patrick Harris). The short, relatively affordable menu includes such specialties as petti di pollo al burro (chicken breasts fried in butter) and bistecca alla Florentina (porterhouse steak cooked on a charcoal grill). Well-priced wines and meringue cake with wild strawberries complete the experience.
