Heading to the beach or out for a day of fishing? Fill up your cooler or picnic basket at one of Nantucket's top sandwich shops first. Provisions, set right on Straight Wharf a few steps from the Hy-Line ferry dock (508-228-3258), is well known for its “Turkey Terrific” sandwich; made with cornbread stuffing and cranberry sauce, it's basically Thanksgiving between two slices of bread. Also on Straight Wharf is the Straight Wharf Fish Store (508-228-1095), which, along with fresh-caught scallops, clams, and fish fillets, just happens to sell the best lobster rolls on the island. At Water Street Bakery (508-228-7080), a hole-in-the-wall adjacent to the eponymous restaurant, go for the killer “A6” sandwich—a delicious pile of salami, sopressata, mortadella, and coppa, smeared with aioli and served on a baguette. A quick drive northeast of Nantucket Town will bring you to Something Natural (50 Cliff Road; 508-228-0504), where the locally famous Portuguese bread is baked on-site; you can have yours layered with everything from liverwurst to PB&J (our favorite combo: avocado, cheddar cheese, and tangy fig chutney).
