Prairie Grass Café
After rising to fame in the Ritz-Carlton kitchen, James Beard Award winner Sarah Stegner and her co-chef George Bumbaris opened this New American restaurant in Northbrook, about 30 minutes outside Chicago. The dining room is open and inviting, with hardwood floors, brick walls, and polished wood furniture set beneath drum pendant lights. Incorporating fresh ingredients from nearby farms, the menu includes dinner entrées like ancho-marinated skirt steak with mushroom ragoût, as well as brunch options like the signature PGC Benedict with crumbled bacon and roasted tomato hollandaise. For dessert, Stegner’s mother bakes a variety of homemade seasonal pies.
