For a city with such a small African-American population (just over 5 percent, according to the latest census), Phoenix boasts some surprisingly good soul food. A longtime staple of the genre, Mrs. White's Golden Rule cooks up her tasty fried chicken in downtown Phoenix (808 E. Jefferson Street; 602/262-9256), while White's grandson Larry (Lo-Lo) set up shop in south Phoenix several years ago. He pairs his chicken with waffles and plenty of syrup. Lo-Lo also serves sodas, but if you want the authentic experience, go for the Kool-Aid stored in a jelly jar.

Tip: Save room for a piece of red velvet cake for dessert.
