Kintaro on the Kuhio Highway in Kapa’a focuses on Japanese fare, but is best known for their inventive--and inexpensive--sushi like the Hanalei Bay roll, which is a deep-fried California roll, and the Bali Hai Bomb roll, which blends crab and smoked salmon, then is baked and topped with wasabi mayonnaise. They are only open for dinner Monday through Saturday beginning at 5:30pm where you can be seated at the bar, a table, or tatami mats in their no-frills, Asian-accented dining room. Crowds are common at Kintaro, so it’s a good idea to make reservations or be at the door when it opens. For dessert, try the green tea ice cream mud pie.
Congratulations to Mei Lin, winner of Top Chef Season 12.
