Located in Middle Quarters at the turnoff for YS Falls, Howie’s is a casual roadside eatery housed in a long, low-slung cinderblock building. Out front, about a dozen steel cauldrons are lined up over pimento wood fires, while the interior contains white tiled floors, plain wooden tables, and bright, childlike murals. The restaurant serves local cuisine 24 hours a day, with specialties including the peanut porridge and the pepper shrimp: river crayfish stir-fried with salt, pepper, Scotch bonnet peppers, and vinegar. Dishes are paired with Red Stripe beer or freshly squeezed juices in seasonal flavors like beet, guava, and soursop.
