Green New American Vegetarian
This café may have a casual, crunchy-granola feel, but the owners are serious about vegan food. You won’t find bland piles of sprouts here. Instead, the “vegan comfort food” (as it’s billed) includes spicy buffalo “wings” (shredded and fried mushrooms with the consistency of chicken wings) served with vegan cucumber ranch dressing. The garlicky poblano hummus with fried pita chips is addictive, as is the Thai peanut sauce. If you’re daring, go for the steak “moo-shroom” po’boy: pulled and shredded portobello simmered in espresso BBQ sauce. For dessert, try a soy-based smoothie; you’ll almost forget what you’re missing.
