Five Guys Burgers and Fries
After pressuring their four (now five) sons to either attend college or create a business, Jerry and Janie Murrell banded together with their family and opened the first Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Virginia in 1986. This Georgetown location retains the flagship store's sparse, 1950’s-esque diner decor with red-and-white tiling and boxes of peanuts (enjoy some while you wait to order). The dining space is outlined with bags of potatoes; a sign in the kitchen announces where these future-fries came from. While the menu is limited mainly to well-done burgers and Hebrew National hot dogs, the unlimited free toppings allow for customization. Five Guys keeps a strict adherence to quality: all burger patties are hand-formed, French fries are hand-cut, and no freezers are allowed.
