El Meson, which serves traditional Mexican fare in a non-trendy location in Southeast Austin, has the look and feel of a century-old Southwestern outpost, with its dusty parking lot and dining room with exposed wooden rafters and wooden support columns. The earth-tone stone walls are decorated with hanging horseshoes and frying pans, with blue-tiled tables throughout. Menu highlights are mole (chicken soaked in a thick and smoky-sweet sauce) and the ancho relleno (a dried poblano pepper stuffed with cheese and fried), all made with fresh ingredients; no microwaves are to be found.
